Must Haves When I Am Camping

by Travis Colette

When it comes to camping, especially in an RV, preparation is key. Working in the RV industry, I’ve heard it a million times from others in the industry: “I would never own a camper, you couldn’t give me one.” My response is consistent every time, “You’re crazy! I love camping. I camp often. Camping is pretty awesome. I enjoy exploring new places, but sometimes I’ll find a spot I adore, wear it out, and then move on to a new destination. Here’s a list of a few must-haves for every camper to consider, items that make my adventures stress-free and enjoyable.”

  1. Leveling Blocks & Chocks: Even on seemingly level ground, blocks and chocks are crucial. Not only do they ensure your RV remains stable, but they also prevent jacks from overextending. Proper leveling also ensures that appliances function optimally.
  2. RV Surge Protector: This is not just a luxury but a necessity. Voltage spikes, lightning, bad power, or incorrectly wired boxes can all damage your RV. And the worst part? It’s not covered under most warranties.
  3. RV Water Pressure Regulator: Water pressure is another factor that can catch you off guard. Spikes in water pressure can flood your RV, turning a relaxing trip into a nightmare. This tool ensures that the water pressure remains steady.
  4. Awning Side Panels: The sun is great, but sometimes you just want to relax in the shade. Side panels or drop screens attached to your RV’s awning can provide much-needed relief from direct sunlight.
  5. Outdoor LED Lights: These lights serve a dual purpose. They’re not only aesthetically pleasing but also functional. Unique lighting can act as a beacon, guiding kids back to the campsite after a day of adventures.
  6. Insect Repelling Candles or Tiki Torches: Nothing ruins an evening faster than pesky insects. These tools not only create a pleasant atmosphere but also keep bugs at bay.
  7. Camp Mat: This simple addition outside your RV entrance can significantly reduce the amount of dirt and debris that finds its way inside.
  8. Quality Disposable Kitchenware: Camping doesn’t mean compromising on dining. Sturdy plates, bowls, and cutlery can make meals feel a little more like home, all while eliminating cleanup.
  9. Spare Coolers Specifically for Ice: Whether it’s for drinks, preserving food, or medical needs, having a dedicated cooler for ice is a game-changer.
  10. Bug Bite Cream: Nature is beautiful, but it comes with its share of annoyances. A good bug bite cream can offer relief from itchy and uncomfortable insect bites.

In conclusion, the key to a successful camping trip lies in the details. While this list is by no means exhaustive, it provides a solid foundation for campers looking to enhance their outdoor experience. There is obviously a ton of other things I bring. These are just a few things I think are a must-have, especially if you’re just getting into camping. Get out there and enjoy what nature has for you. And as always, Happy Camping!
